Backups
Backups that come back
Every night the server makes an encrypted copy of everything a site cannot get back from its code. It is kept in three places, and every fourth Sunday a copy is restored from scratch to show that it really works.
If something breaks on your site, I put it back from last night’s copy. To be sure that works, I rehearse restoring the copies on a schedule.
Three places
7 nights
On the server
A copy stays beside the site, so a restore can start at once, from the panel. It is the first place, not the only one: if the server itself failed, this copy would go with it.
30 days
On my PC
Three times a day the PC asks for new copies, compares each one’s size and checksum, and checks that it opens. The server cannot reach the PC: only the PC fetches. If the PC is off at the time, it does so as soon as it starts.
30 days, locked
In Amsterdam
Every night at 04:40 the copy is sent to Backblaze storage in Amsterdam. There it is locked for 30 days: nobody can delete or change it, not with the server’s key and not with the account’s own login. A delete tried with the server’s key was refused.
Every copy is encrypted on the server. Only two keys open it: one on my PC, and one on the server for restores. A stolen copy cannot be read without a key.
Restoring from the panel
One file or folder
A photo or a page deleted by mistake, say.
The whole site
When an edit broke more than can be fixed by hand.
The database
Bookings, prices and texts as they were that night.
Any of the last 7 nights can be chosen. Every restore leaves an undo point that is kept for 14 days, and even the undo can be undone. You can do it yourself in the panel, or ask me.
The restore drill
A backup nobody has tried to restore is only a hope. So every fourth Sunday morning my PC takes the newest copy and restores it in two closed places: Windows Sandbox, with no network and no keys, and a virtual machine where the whole server is rebuilt from the copy. Every site must come up and pass its checks. Then copies broken on purpose are restored, and each one must be caught. The result is recorded in the panel against every site.
18 October 2026, the last full drill (started by hand)
- 76 of 76 checks in Windows Sandbox
- 128 of 128 checks on the rebuilt server
- 18 of 18 broken copies caught
Which sites
Every live site I look after on my server is copied every night and restored in the drill, teatro.lt, roziunamas.lt and this one among them. hortus.lt and infavorem.lt are still hosted at Telia, so they are not in these copies yet.
The times are the server’s and the PC’s timers, Vilnius time; the drill’s counts are its logs of 18 October 2026. I promise no restore time: it depends on what is restored.
Has your site’s backup ever been restored?
Tell me where your site is hosted and how it is backed up. I will tell you what it takes for a bad day to be undone.
You will hear back within one working day.
